Aloysius W. McCabe
Aloysius W. McCabe, age 94, of DeKalb, IL, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 17, 2026, at Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, IL.
He was born December 5, 1931, in Norwood Park Twp, Cook County, IL and was the son of Joseph and Eleanor (Osche) McCabe.
Al honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Army's 7th Infantry Division, famously nicknamed the “Bayonet Division”.
Al married Amanda “Mandy” Mikez on July 9, 1960, in DeKalb. They shared nearly 59 years of marriage before her passing on March 24, 2019. Al met Mandy while working at DeKalb Cleaners before beginning a 40 year career at Greenacre Cleaners. On a part-time basis, Al thoroughly enjoyed his bartending days throughout the years at Rukavina’s, Sully’s, and KC’s (Knights of Columbus) where his friendly nature and love of conversation made him a favorite among those who knew him or were meeting him for the first time.
Whether you knew him as Al, Sonny, or Murph, Al had a gift for making friends wherever he went; He “never met a stranger” on any of his adventures, including several Canadian fishing trips and a trip to Ireland with his children. Above all, he especially cherished the time he spent with his family, creating special memories and enjoying the simple moments with us.
His warmth, kindness and his genuine interest in others will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Al was a devoted member of Saint Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb in a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council #717. He faithfully followed his favorite teams, the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bears and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son-in-law, Paul Overby and his siblings Herbie, Marie, Annabelle, Margaret, Evelyn, Helen, John, Hazel, and Tony.
Al is survived by his children, Kathleen (Michael) Larson, Michael (Sally) Smoltich and Patricia Overby, his grandchildren, Joe, Sarah, Julie, Laura, Kara, Anna, Christy, Melissa, and Jeremy, 18 great grandchildren, his sister, Rita “Dolly” Gatto, his sister-in-law, Mary “Metsa” Hayenga and several nieces and nephews.
Family was everything to grandpa Al and he was everything to all of us and we know he will forever be looking out for us.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 11, 2026, from 10:00 am – 10:30 am at St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb which will be followed by a Mass at 10:30 am with Father Dean Russell officiating. Burial will take place after the Mass at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in DeKalb.
A Celebration of Life is also planned for Friday, September 11, 2026, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in DeKalb at 12:30 pm.
