Carole A. Gordon, 77, of DeKalb, Illinois died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by family Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Kishwaukee Hospital.
Born January 4, 1939 on the family farm in Harvard, Illinois, she was the youngest of Gustav and Edna Askelson's eight children. Carole married James Gordon on June 16, 1967 in DeKalb and cherished their life together until his death in 2010. She was a devoted mother, friend and neighbor.
Carole graduated from DeKalb Township High School Class of 1956. She enjoyed jazz music, theater and sharing good food and lively conversation with friends. Carole also delighted in travel, including frequent trips to Bermuda and the various presidential libraries. Ever proud of her Norwegian heritage, she realized a lifelong dream when she and Jim visited the homesteads of her parents and grandparents in Stavanger, Norway.
The things that made Carole the happiest, however, were surely tending to the plants and flowers in her gardens and spoiling her grandchildren.
Deeply patriotic, Carole found great satisfaction in being able to exercise her right to vote before she passed.
She is survived by her two sons, Michael of Chicago and Seth (Tracy) Gordon of Sussex, Wisconsin; grandchildren Connor, Sophia and Allison; a sister and numerous nieces and nephews—many of whom were like siblings to her.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim; her parents; three brothers and three sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Barb City Manor, DeKalb County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, KishHealth System Hospice or DeKalb County Community Foundation.
Visitation will be held beginning at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 12, 2016 at Finch Funeral Home, 310 Oak St. DeKalb. A memorial service will be held immediately following at 11:00 a.m., the Rev. Kurt Simon officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, DeKalb. Cremation has taken place at the Finch Crematory. To send an online condolence visit: www.finchfuneralhomedekalb.com.
