Carolyn H. Thompson died Feb 18, 2015, at Kishwaukee Hospital, DeKalb, IL after living courageously and graciously without complaint for many years with multiple sclerosis.
Carolyn Hermine (Hamm) Thompson 79 was born September 13, 1935, in Chicago to parents Amy Shirley (Swanson) and Fred A. Hamm. Upon her mother?s death when she was 6, she and her father moved in with her aunt and uncle until her graduation from Elgin High School in 1953. She then Attended Northern Illinois University School of Business and worked in DeKalb as a secretary until the birth of her children. She married Gordon A. Thompson of DeKalb in Elgin, IL, at St. Paul?s Evangelical and Reformed Church, now St. Paul?s United Church of Christ (UCC) and made their home in DeKalb.
She was a loving homemaker, good friend to many, avid reader, loyal Cubs fan, daily viewer of cooking shows, favorite soap operas, and mystery programs, and classic films around the holidays. In her earlier days she contributed to her community as a member, officer, and board member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, DeKalb Junior Women?s Club, DeKalb County Cancer Society , the DeKalb School PTA, the DeKalb Welcome Wagon, was a charter member of the Kishwaukee Community Health Services Center Auxiliary, and a member of the First Congregational Church, UCC, of DeKalb. In 1971, she was entered in that year?s edition of Outstanding Young Women of America in recognition of her outstanding ability, accomplishments and service to her community, country and profession. She laughed easily, greeted you with a smile, and always wanted to know what was going on in your life, seldom talking about hers unless asked. She loved her cat Smokey, they were all named Smokey except for Jet, all of her springer spaniels named Peppy over the years, and a regular supporter of humane societies, the American Cancer Society, and the MS Society.
She is survived by two sons , Mark Thompson and Richard (Gayle Dorland) Thompson, both of DeKalb, their father, Gordon A (Kay)Thompson of Anthem AZ, granddaughter Brooke Thompson of Maple Park, her beloved cousins Joan (Arthur) Richoz of DeKalb and Robert (Janet) Gavelek of Elgin, IL, Kimberli (Daniel) Wiemer of Red Wing, MN, Suzon (James) Kowalski of Glendale Heights IL, Gina Gavelek of Gilberts IL, Bradley (Melissa) Gavelek of Elgin, Bruce Ackermannn of California, and Dorelle Ackermann of Mokena, IL. and good friend Carol Denton of Cortland.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her special aunt and uncle Elsie B. and William A. Gavelek of Elgin, IL, her mother and father in-law, Harry and Vivian Thompson of DeKalb, a special aunt and uncle, Katherine and Phillip Niederberger of Chicago, special cousins Dorothy and Marc Ackermann of Florida, and good friend Pat Farley of DeKalb.
The family would like to thank Drs. Haab, her primary care physician, Patel, Thakkar, and Burstein, of the DeKalb Clinic, and the staffs of the DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center (DCRNC), where she resided for the last 4 ½ years, and those of Kishwaukee Hospital for their caring support and compassionate care. She was also most grateful to be able to remain in her own home for many years with the faithful assistance of Paul Lakomiak, Jane Williams, Carol Sturm, Amy Jackson, Mariah Burdick, Rene Olson, Joanna Kalamaras, and many others, too numerous to mention along the way, and for the visits from Carol Rolf, Pat and Peter Lawes, Pastors Judy Harris and Joe Gastiger of First Congregational Church who brightened her day, her caring roommate at DCRNC for the past 4 ½ years, Irene Singleton,
the kind drivers and people of Voluntary Action Center, the occasional DeKalb Paramedic who came to the rescue, and her beautician, Kim Neville from Linda?s Touch of Class, and Linda Perkins, who went the extra mile to put beauty and joy in her life. We have wonderful people and services in DeKalb and we thank them all. Instead of flowers, memorials can be made to the family to be established at a later date.
