Daniel F. Skelley

Daniel F. Skelley passed away at home, in Columbus, GA, on November 6, 2023, at the age of 75. He was born June 20, 1948, in DeKalb, IL, to the late Burton and Barbara (Tracy) Skelley.

His K-12 education was in DeKalb schools, and he graduated from DeKalb High School in 1966. While at DHS he participated in Cross Country, Basketball, and Track & Field. Dan was a member of the band, and was named the John Philip Sousa Award winner his senior year. He was also named Bausch & Lomb Science Awardee. Dan was Co-Valedictorian of his senior class and was named a National Merit Scholarship recipient.

Dan then enrolled at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he majored in Mathematics. He was selected for membership in two honorary societies: Tau Beta Pi, the engineering Honor Society; and Pi Mu Epsilon, a National Mathematics Society. He served as president of the Georgia Beta chapter of this Society.

Dan was a Teaching Assistant for the Georgia Tech mathematics department for several years, starting during his undergraduate years. He received a Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree in Applied Mathematics.

After teaching math at the college and high school level, Dan joined AFLAC, Inc in December 1983. He was promoted to Vice President in 1993, a position he held until his retirement in June 2014. During that time, he was a member of the American Academy of Actuaries and a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, where he was on their Exam Committee. In this role he helped to write the questions for the Actuarial Exams and served as a grader for these exams.

Dan is survived by his wife of 44 years, Janet Skelley; brothers James (Susan) Skelley of Naperville, IL and Robert (Nancy) Skelley of Sycamore, IL; nieces Christina Skelley and Molly Matheny; nephews Miguel Skelley, Glenn (Kira) Skelley, Samuel Skelley, and Mark Skelley; several grand nieces and nephews. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, and grand-parents Daniel and Delma (Wittbecker) Skelley; Fredrick and Lilian (Dinsmore) Tracy.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 10:00am-11:00am at Finch Funeral home in DeKalb. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 11:00am at the funeral home. Burial will be immediately following the service at Fairview Park Cemetery. Memorials in memory of Dan can be donated to Opportunity House, Sycamore, IL or to a charity of your choice.
