Donald L. Cook

Donald L Cook of DeKalb, IL (87 years) recently passed into God's hands at his home on Monday evening February 20, 2023, in the loving presence of his family. At his side was his devoted and loving wife of 70 years Faith (Ebbesen) Cook along with daughters Diane Ewald (Ron), and Kathy Cook (son Kevin (Dean) is previously deceased). Visiting and in spirit during in last days were his grandchildren Masen, JaNae and Mitchell (wife Mikhail). Don was born in September 1935 in Mendota, IL to Leland and Margaret Cook. He is survived by his sister Carol Maakastad, with two brothers, Jerry and Gail previously deceased.

After graduating DeKalb High School in 1953, he began a 42 year career at the DeKalb motor division of General Electric. His work ethic and commitment to quality quickly earned him a select appointment to the GE management apprentice program, whereby he excelled and become experienced in all areas of production and management. He retired with honorary award in 1996.

Although his work served to satisfy career interests, it supported his most passionate commitment … his family. Family vacations were always a priority, not only for his own children, but for his grandchildren as well. He encouraged and supported a strong education, traveling, cultural events and related family activities.

In leisure, Don found endless enjoyment on the golf course, and inspired his wife Faith to learn the game as well; the two played many rounds across many courses, and competed in local and state tournaments. He enjoyed the humble competition among the DeKalb park district golf community, and was an avid sports fan. Among his favorites were the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cubs.

When it came to 'giving back', Don felt an obligation. He and Faith have been generous contributors to local, national and international charitable causes; with a genuine interest in supporting the renovation of the DeKalb library, along with the DeKalb County Community Foundation and St. Mary's Catholic Church.

We will miss his smile, sense of humor, playful ways and his genuine, gentle, caring soul.

Memorial services will be Saturday, March 11, 2023, at St. Mary's Church in DeKalb, IL. There will be a one hour visitation at the church beginning at 9:30am followed by Mass service at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be offered to 'The DeKalb County Community Foundation' on behalf of the Don & Faith Cook Community Fund.
