DeKalb
James (Jim) A. Maakestad
James (Jim) A. Maakestad passed away peacefully on July 11, 2024, two days shy of his 94th birthday. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, who will be deeply missed by all.
Jim was born on July 13, 1930, in Waterman, Illinois, to Evelyn and Melvin Maakestad. Jim was raised in Lee, Illinois and moved to DeKalb following his high school graduation. There Jim met Carole, the love of his life, and eventually convinced her to marry him. They were married for 63 years.
Jim was in the car business for many years, but ended his career with General Electric, from which he retired at age 62. He also served a tour of duty with the U.S. Army. Jim and Carole enjoyed a long retirement together, spending most winters living in a Florida golf community. Both were passionate golfers and Jim boasted 9 holes-in-one in his lifetime. Jim has also enjoyed spending time on the lake and was an ace water-skier in his younger days. In the last several years Jim's mind remained sharp even as his body became weaker. He excelled at puzzles and had a daily friendly Wordle competition with his daughters and nephew, Dennis.
Jim loved his family even more than golf, and cherished all the good times they had together. He is survived by his wife Carole, son Jeff, daughters Lisa and Lori, son-in-law Steve, and grandson Ben, who just graduated with honors from George Washington University. Jim was predeceased by his older brother, Raymon, as well as a great many friends and relatives.
The family would like to thank all the staff and wonderful people at the DeKalb County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for the care and kindness they showed Jim and his family during his illness. Jim was especially thankful for the great care Dr. Deval Thakkar gave him during his life. We will always be grateful.
A private interment will be held at St. Mary Cemetery. Cremation rites and arrangements were entrusted to Finch Funeral Home 310 Oak St. DeKalb, IL 60115 815-758-3841.
