Janice Mary Briski
Janice Mary Briski 79, of DeKalb passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at her home in DeKalb. She was born October 11, 1945, in Rockford, IL and was the daughter of Richard F. and Mary Jane (Vandoni) Kearns.
Janice grew up on the South Side of Chicago, proudly embracing her rich heritage as both Irish and Italian. She carried that pride with her throughout her life; fiery, funny, and full of love. She married Phillip A. Briski on February 16, 1985, in Chicago, IL. Later in life, she moved to DeKalb to be closer to her newly born twin grandchildren, a decision that would deepen an already strong bond with them and their siblings. She remained a constant, loving presence in their lives until her passing.
To those who knew and loved her, Janice was never just "Janice." She was Jan, Jano, January, Janmar, and most tenderly, MeMa. Each nickname held a piece of her spirit and the special place she held in people's hearts.
Technology was a bit of an adventure for Jan, one that brought both laughter and mild frustration. Her "love-hate" relationship with it left her with five Facebook accounts, three Instagrams, and two TikToks, a digital footprint as unique and colorful as she was.
Music was a true passion of hers, especially the rock of the '70s, and she passed that love down to her children and grandchildren. Her house was often filled with music, laughter, and warmth. She had a deep appreciation for movies, books, and a great practical joke. Her green thumb brought beauty to her garden, and her creative soul came alive in the sparkling crystal suncatchers she lovingly made. Her home reflected her vibrant personality, every corner thoughtfully decorated, not just for herself, but to bring joy to others.
Jan celebrated life fully, and holidays were no exception. She went all out for each one, with Christmas and Halloween holding special places in her heart. Her joy was infectious, her spirit unforgettable.
More than anything, Jan loved being with her family. Her legacy lives on in the traditions she started, the music she shared, and the many lives she touched with her kindness and light. The family would like to thank Unity Hospice and their nurses; Megan and Sarah, and Kim from Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital.
Survivors include; husband Phil of DeKalb, children Kim (Mike) Leopardo of DeKalb and Steve Matlock of Lemont, IL. Grandchildren; Mike, Maddie, Jane and Grace Leopardo. Sister Nancy Kearns of DeKalb. Many nieces and nephews including her beloved; Mary (Vince) Arrigo, Bridget (Dan) Woods, Joe (Kaelin)Kearns, and Ricky (Alana) Kearns. and several great nieces and nephews. Jan was preceded in death by her parents and brother Joe Kearns.
Jan was blessed with a tight-knit circle of lifelong friends who lovingly called themselves "The Electras." Together, Andy, Cathy, Ginger, Janey, Karen, and the late Maureen shared decades of laughter, tears, adventures, and countless memories. Their bond was more than friendship—it was a sisterhood that stood the test of time, filled with inside jokes, unconditional support, and a whole lot of love.
In honor of Jan's wishes, there will be no formal service. Take a quiet moment, play your favorite song, and let the memories come. Remember her laughter, her love, the good times you shared, and the light she brought into your life. That's how she wanted to be remembered, with music in your heart and a smile on your face.
Memorials can be made to the family to be established at a later date. Cremation rites and arrangements were entrusted to Finch Funeral Home 310 Oak St. DeKalb, IL 60115 815-758-3841.
