Richard H. Tempel III

Richard H. Tempel III 67, of DeKalb passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at his home in DeKalb. He was born September 18, 1957, in Elmhurst, IL and was the son of Richard H. and Gladys (Penson) Tempel II.

Richard's life was one marked by quiet dedication, steady service, and deep love—for his family, his faith, and his community. After graduating high school, he pursued his education at Elgin Community College and went on to earn his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Northern Illinois University. He brought his skills and commitment to excellence to his work as an engineer at Burgess Norton in Geneva, Illinois, and later retired from Leading Edge Hydraulics in Rockford.

On October 26, 1985, Richard married Clara Huttunen at Bethany Road Bible Church in DeKalb—a union filled with love, family, and shared purpose until Clara's passing in 2013. In time, God brought love into his life once more, and on November 8, 2014, Richard married Janell Nelson, again at Bethany Road Bible Church, the spiritual home that meant so much to him throughout his life.

Richard's devotion to his church was the heart of who he was. He was a faithful and active member of Bethany Road Bible Church, and his service extended far beyond Sunday mornings. He poured his time and heart into volunteering with the Rock House Kids Ministry in Rockford for over a decade, sharing his faith and kindness with children. He also gave generously of his time to Love Inc. in DeKalb, an organization committed to helping those in need, a cause that resonated deeply with Richard's compassionate spirit.

He found joy in the simple things: the peace of camping under the stars, the satisfaction of a job well done, and the deep, enduring fellowship of his church family. But above all, Richard loved people, his family, his friends, and his church. His life was a testament to his strength, steadfast faith, and selfless love. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and service that will not be forgotten.
