DeKalb
Velda M. Grubbs
Velda M. Grubbs 86, of DeKalb passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at home surrounded by family. She was born June 21, 1939, in Paw Paw, IL and was the daughter of Oliver and Bessie (Baird) Cradduck.
Velda married the love of her life, Roy K. Grubbs, on June 6, 1955 in Paw Paw, IL. Their love story began in the most beautiful way, as pen pals during the war. Writing letters slowly turned into a lifetime of devotion. From words on paper grew a marriage filled with faith, laughter, and unwavering love.
She dedicated many years as a trusted bookkeeper for several organizations, including Del Monte, Glad Tidings Church, and Tammy Tadd Quilting. No matter where she worked, she was known for her reliability, quiet strength, and steady presence.
Velda was a faithful member of City Light Church, formerly Glad Tidings, where she lovingly taught Bible study for many years. Her faith was the foundation of her life, and she poured that faith into her family and community.
She found joy in the simple, meaningful things; reading a good book, quilting and sewing with care, crocheting gifts for loved ones, and cheering on her beloved Chicago Cubs. She also had a special talent for lovingly "bossing" her daughters around, always guiding them with wisdom, humor, and a whole lot of heart.
But above all else, Velda's greatest love was her husband, Roy. He was her heart, her partner, and her constant. The love they built from handwritten letters carried them through a lifetime together, and it remained the truest and most cherished part of her story.
She is survived by daughters; Tammy (Gary) Tadd of DeKalb, Barb (Michael) Tatham of WA, and Melanie Grubbs of DeKalb and son; Brian Grubbs of GA. Several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Roy, Sons Kenneth, Roger, and Roy Jr. "Scooter". Brothers; Leonard, Harold, and Donald, and sister; Lois Grubbs.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 at 12:00pm at City Light Church DeKalb with an open family and friends gathering at 11:00 a.m., at City Light Church 2325 N 1st St DeKalb. Memorials can be made to the family to be established at a later date. Cremation rites and arrangements were entrusted to Finch Funeral Home 310 Oak St. DeKalb, IL 60115 815-758-3841.
