Wanda J. Rutter

Wanda J. Rutter 86, of DeKalb, passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at Oak Crest in DeKalb. She was born July 4, 1940, in DeKalb, IL and was the daughter of Arthur and Eugenia (Lake) Stroyan.

Wanda graduated from DeKalb High School in 1958 and went on to work as a data analyst for Northern Illinois University for more than 35 years. She was also a devoted member of Grace United Methodist Church in Maple Park for over 50 years, where her faith and friendships were an important part of her life.

Wanda married her beloved husband, John “Butch” C. Rutter, on November 4, 1962, at First Baptist Church in DeKalb. Butch preceded her in death on November 14, 2025.

A lifelong sports fan, Wanda especially enjoyed cheering on the Brooklyn Dodgers and Green Bay Packers. But her greatest joy came from being in the stands for her family. She rarely missed her son’s sporting events and loved attending as many of her grandchildren’s events as she could. She took great pride in supporting her family and was known for spending time “warming up her boys” before their games.

Above all, Wanda cherished her family. They were the most important part of her life, and she treasured every opportunity to spend time with them and create memories together. She found happiness in the simple things, too, especially enjoying a Jr. Raspberry Sundae from Ollie’s Frozen Custard in DeKalb, a favorite treat that brought her plenty of smiles over the years.

Wanda will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her love of sports, her strong faith, and the many little moments that made her life so special to those who knew and loved her.

Survivors include sons; John (Polly) Rutter Jr. of Naperville, IL and Dan (Michelle) Rutter of Aurora, IL. Grandchildren; Breanna Rutter, Broc (Tori) Rutter, Rachel, Riley, and Cole Rutter. Great grandchild Lilly and several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John “Butch” Rutter, brothers; Robert (JoAnn & Cathy) and Dean (Marilyn) Stroyan.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be sent to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or Grace United Methodist Church of Maple Park. Arrangements were entrusted to Finch Funeral Home 310 Oak St. DeKalb, IL 60115 815-758-3841.
